HHB: You grew up in Miami, right? DJ Mixx: That’s right; North Miami Beach, to be exact. But for the last 4 years I’ve been in New York City, bringing some Miami Heat to the freezer, lol. Everyone seems to love the whole Miami Movement right now… that Southern swagger mixed with a taste of the tropics… I’m here to provide the opportunity to buy-in. Get at me. HHB: How did you get into djing? DJ Mixx: When I was growing up, my parents were in the skating rink business. They were always working, so to be around them, I had to come to work, too. I gravitated towards the Dj Booth because I always loved music, and as a kid, I looked up to the individuals that happened to be playing…I observed…zoned for a while…and before I knew it, the music just became me. It wasn’t a conscious decision, at all. It was just a natural progression, as an extension of who I was. I kept with it, growing my beginnings at the arena, and then once people caught wind of this 12 or 13 year-old kid on the turntables, putting in some serious work, my opportunities expanded. HHB: Which djs inspire you the most? DJ Mixx: Any Dj that brings knowledge, creativity, precision, passion, and personality to what they do. It may seem like a laundry list of great requests, but I guess what inspires me is greatness. So, it could be a no-name soundman playing in some basement, or a professional mixer rocking on the radio…it all comes down to vibes. A couple of names, though: King Waggy Tee, Kid Capri, Dj Khaled (during his hungry, underground radio years, especially), Dj Craze, Funkmaster Flex, Bobby Konders, everyone in my Immense Music Squad, and when I was younger, really looking up to dudes, I was inspired by a Florida sound-system named Cancer Hi-Power. HHB: If you weren’t djing what would you be doing? And why? DJ Mixx: Well, I’ve done more than Dj, so I’d probably be wearing one of my other hats, lol… I’ve made music, modeled, done some lifestyles marketing, and have even taken interest in some social activism… I’ve had moments intertwining all of the above. I just need to remain creative, in pursuit of new artistic heights, but at the same time, I’m driven by the desire to create a larger social relevance. So, I’d definitely be somehow blending those components. HHB: What makes you a great Dj? DJ Mixx: My attention to all the virtues listed in the “inspiration” section. Also, coming up here, I’ve noticed that it’s common to split Dj bills along lines of specialty…promoters will hire certain Djs for Reggae, and certain Djs for Hip Hop. Growing up with one foot in each circle, I’ve acquired the ability to play both with the same mastery…I guess you would call it musical well-roundedness. I’m a younger cat but I look up to dudes holding the classical order…where one dj plays all night, and they better be nice in all categories. I also bring high-impact, party vibes to everything I do, don’t get tired, and I’m vocal… so, I really provide that personal presence that it requires to take the party to its next level. HHB: What makes a good party? DJ Mixx: A great Dj, a powerful sound system, and an open-minded crowd, ready to sweat. HHB: I see you are involved with different clothing brands and companies. How essential is it for a dj to branch outside of the “dj booth”? DJ Mixx: Absolutely. And very quickly, shouts to: Adidas, Frontline Promotions, Famous Nobody, Alador&Smith, Parish, Money Clothing, Fat Cop XXL, Hyt Me, The ICU, and Skull Candy. As far as it being essential for a dj to branch out, I feel like that’s definitely the case. Any Dj must recognize himself as an artist, a brand, and an industry…any ambitious dj must focus on the horizon as much as, if not more than, the present…so, to expand your influence, recognition, and general worth as an entertainer, you must expand your network/circle of affiliations; brand-involvement is just a strategic way of doing so. The world is bigger than the mixtape or club, itself…and there’s a world of money to be made. To cross-market and take advantage of creative synergies is a Djs entrepreneurial responsibility. As my homie M-1 once said- “Young people, be serious.” Lol. And get what’s out there to be got. HHB: What projects are you currently working on? DJ Mixx: I’m always working on expanding my brand in different ways, so seeking new parties, musical opportunities, and cross-marketing potentials will always be the larger objective. Specifically, though, there is much in the works…One of the projects that will soon be underway, is my participation in a series of nationwide mixtapes, coordinated by Atlantic Records, to promote T.I.’s new clothing line, Akoo; I will be featured as one of headlining Djs representing my region… just trying to get my A-List on real-quick, lol.
