HHB: Aye famo, What's going on? Do me a favor introduce yourself to the people? Let them know you are, and where your representing? HHB: How would you define your music? can you define "The Whole Of Hip Hop Music in one artist"?
Meko Mcafee: yeah man..the whole of hip hop. Hip Hop is fun, innovative, original, though provoking, educational, rough, edgy, sophisticated…my music is all that..and some..lol
HHB: Who/what intrigued you in your life to love music as much as you do, and want to pursue a career?
Meko Mcafee: Well my mother said my biological father was a Radio Dj..so that might have something to do with it. But all I known is music..I had those wake you up a 9 am on Saturday clean up this damn house while playing luther records parents..lol. I didn’t get into rap til I was about 10 or 11..My parents played gap Band, Parliament, Isley’s, Marvin..Freddie..etc..so I could sing I probably would’ve been a singer. But the 1st tape I ever bought with my own money was LL’s Walking With A Panther and Kool Moe’s Knowledge is Power. But Bobby Brown made me wanna be a entertainer. I did my 1st talent show to My Prerogative. I knew from that day forward entertainment was for me.
HHB: Can you remember your first rap song? and where was it recorded?
Meko Mcafee: My 1st song I ever did was in my man’s Kunt’s room on his 4track called “Standing in the Heart of Downtown”..i was talking bout sellin weed.
HHB: In high school you and a few friends formed a rap group called "Self Made Hustlaz" are you guys still together?\
Meko Mcafee: We are family. We started as kids..were closer than just a rap group. But..theres always a but..lol…due to legal problems and creative differences we are not together anymore.
HHB: How did the experience of being in a group help your career, but at the same time how did it lead you to want and go solo?
Meko Mcafee: It helped me as far as being open-minded to others ideas. Plus hip hop is very competitive and we always had that friendly competition thing so it kept me on point every song. But again if you are in a group..everyone should have their own identity and bring something unique and different to the group..but theres gotta be a median..in our group we didn’t have that…one person wants to go completely south sounding..someone wants to go hip hop..someone wants to sound bay area..couldnt meet eachother in the middle
HHB: You guys did numbers in the streets with the last released album "Low To Hi" of selling over 2,000 copies independantly. What were the thought running through your mind after reviewing the results in the sales?
Meko Mcafee: Couldn’t believe we did that many. But then again could believe it. The Bay is the home of the independent grind, from Too Short to MC Hammer to E-40 and so on..so we were young and hungry and had the gift to gab and a pretty decent product to back up the talk and before you know it seemed almost everyone in the city had it.
HHB: What point in your career opened your eyes to see thats there’s a positive in the hip hop community for you?
Meko Mcafee: The day I received my first radio spin. The day I heard Bay Whomp get thrown in the mix. My Mother cried. I cried. Some people have gotten to their status based off of affiliation and connections. But to the people who have grinded 10 years plus..goin thru the motions of not wanting to do it anymore or thinking that maybe being a star isn’t part of God’s plan for you to finally seeing some progress is overwhelming. That day forward, I felt positive about what I was doing.
HHB: How do you feel of the business these days?
Meko Mcafee: its mixed. Wish there were more consumers. Appreciate the bootleggers for the free pub but wish there were more consumers. On the flip, wish there were more innovators. I remember there were handfuls of artist I had to by their album the moment t touched the shelves because it was gonna inspire me. Those days are long gone. You are lucky if 3 cuts on their album is dope. Wayne and Drake showed me the little consumers we have will still by records if they feel its up to par. So im just working on this EP trying to get it to the level where it makes sense to the consumer, hence make dollars.
HHB: where do you see yourself in 3 yrs?
Meko Mcafee: Being nominated for Grammy’s.
HHB: Any projects lined up? If so share...
Meko Mcafee: the Justifiable Means Ep dropping late April. McAfee: The Anti-Virus is the official album..hoping to have it done by the 3rd quarter..but im sending out music all the time until those projects drop. Just put out 2 videos for the Ep and the 3rd will be out early April to relally give the Ep that final promo push. Sky’s the limit g.
